Everyone, Meet Peter Wright and his friend, Sandy the 125lb Sand Stump
This one is not going easily!
I keep trying to tell myself I’m never gonna find this again, but I have several other anvils that get regular work and Peter has just been sitting.
You gotta seriously take care of him! No leaving in rain, or letting your apprentice sledge on it!

Details:
Age - unknown. It doesn’t have the “England” stamp which makes it the older series. Pre - 1900
Weight - stone weight system markings have been identified. 2 -1-20 is marked clearly on the side which translates to (2x112lb)+(1x28lb)+20lbs = 272lbs
Size - Height from base to face 12.75” - Horn tip to heel 29’’ - Face width 5.5’ total width/4.75” edge to step/.75’ step’to edge - Face length 17 7/8’’ - horn length 8’’ - horn plus step 11’’ - horn width 4.25’’ - anvil base 13’’x11’’- stump 18’’x15’’ wide by 16’’ high - Ground to face at heel 30’’
Style - Fully forged / solid wrought iron with steel face. Made in England ( Someone told me its a wheelwrights pattern anvil due to the angle of the stance but I'm not educated on the subject)
Condition - Good Condition - This is an excellent workhorse shop anvil but its not perfect. At 400lbs total weight you can forge anything on it. Its face is flat and has no sway. The edges are in good to excellent condition for an anvil of this age. Heel edge is perfect. I once cursed the previous owners for cutting the hardy hole out. Well, I was wrong. When we started doing decorative work and drifting/punching bigger holes in stuff, being able to send the drift right through becomes worth its’ weight in gold. Wanna make hammers? So easy on this anvil! Because we have multiple anvils the hardy has never been an actual issue. Nor has the previous owners attempt to manually mill the top with it being over 4.5” wide before the step and 5.5’’ wide full face! Believe it or not that little step comes in handy. : ) The ring is typical for a forged wrought iron anvil, a little higher pitch than i like. Overall, the ring is fairly subdued on the sand block. The block is overlapped framing lumber, a box of screws, and 120lbs of sand inside. Best stumps you can make and it quiets everything down. This stump had lost some sand and i always wanted to redo it with bags lining the walls like the other stumps. Well, you got new sand and lined walls!
